Yorkshire, England, is home to perhaps oneof the most well-known tourist attractions. Haworth, the small Pennine town isalso known as Bronte country and was the home of Charlotte , Emily and AnneBronte. The story of the Bronte family is a tale of early death like manyfamilies in the early 19th century. The sisters were orphaned in1821 and the family lived at Haworth Parsonage, which still stands today.
In the 1820’s there was a prejudice againstfemale writers and by this time the sisters were showing their creativity bywriting poems but writing under the unisex pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis andActon Bell.
The beautiful Moors around Haworth inspiredthe novels of Jayne Eyre published by Charlotte Bronte in 1847 and WutheringHeights published by Emily Bronte , also in 1847 and Anne’s The Tenent ofWildfell Hall in 1848.
However, by late 1848 Emily and Anne Brontewere both suffering from tuberculosis and Emily died in December 1848 aged 30.Anne died in May 1849 aged 29.  Charlotte Bronte went on to publish twomore novels but died whilst pregnant in Scarborough in March 1855, aged 38 andonly 9 months after getting married.
The pretty village of Haworth lies on asteep hill and the main street is lined with traditional shops and cafes likeThe Old Apothecary Shop, where you can almost step back in time in theirmuseum-like shop. You will also find art shops and traditional chocolate andsweet shops.
A visit to Haworth, though is not completewithout a visit to the Bronte Parsonage Museum built in 1778. Inside this historicbuilding you can visit the dining room where the Bronte sisters did most oftheir writing and you can also see the piano used by the Bronte family. Theoriginal clock is still there to see and upstairs you can visit CharlotteBronte’s bedroom.
If you take the trouble to walk 10 minutesfrom Haworth village you will see some of the finest scenery that Yorkshire hasto offer. Moorland, outcrops of rocks, waterfalls and beautiful views as wellas the famous Top Withens derelict farmhouse which is said to have been theinspiration for the novel Wuthering Heights.
If you are on the tourist route inYorkshire then it is worth taking the time to visit Haworth. Be warned, however, that throngs of tourists descend on the village in summer and parking can be aproblem.
