Since the 1850's, Halloween festivities have been observed in North America when Irish immigrants arrived in the United States and continued to celebrate their ‘Night of the Samhain.’
Today many Halloween festivities have been turned into a commercial venture but of course, that doesn't diminish the fun-filled day of costumes, decorations, parties, and of course, candy! According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 170 Americans will be celebrating Halloween this year bringing in an estimated $8 billion worth of spending!
In Mexico, Halloween marks the beginning of the two-day Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebration. Families are invited to feast at homes of those who have lost loved ones (Feast of the Dead) and an entire night is spent graveside lovingly remembering family members who have passed on.
Halloween is celebrated on November 1st in Romania. Transylvania, the birthplace of Dracula, plays host to infinite parties for singles, horror buffs, charity balls, and children, with participants dressed in ghoulish vampire costumes.
Halloween tours are big business in Romania and many of them include a visit to Dracula’s Castle and the Tomb of Dracula; some also include visiting Sighisoara, the true birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula.
The largest Halloween party in the USA is held in Greenwich Village, New York. Their annual themed Village Halloween Parade draws an audience of over 2 million people and 50,000 participants. Also known as New York’s Carnival, this one evening event channels an estimated USD $60 million into New York’s economy. If you're visiting New Orleans, be sure to check out the Vodoo Music Experience (this years headliners include Green Day, Skrillex, Jack White, Neil Young and Green Day) a Haunted Ghost tour, or the Endless Night Vampire Ball. And don't miss the 'Krewe of Halloween' Official Parade in the Boo Carre,where you'll be sure to hear 'trick or treat' along with 'throw me something, monster!!!'
